Schedule:

Three meetings weekly:  M,W,F........ 10:00 am - 10:50 pm  (CHEM 0115)

                                          W.................11:00 am - 11:50 pm  (CHEM 0115)

Text:  The textbook for the course will be David Griffiths, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, any edition.  However, because Griffiths does not fully cover all the material that we will be discussing in class, I recommend as a supplementary text Richard Liboff, Introductory Quantum Mechanics, Liboff puts more emphasis on Dirac notation, which we will use extensively this semester.

Homework: There will be a total of 12 homework assignments. The homework assignment will be posted on the course website each Thursday, and will be due in class at 10:00 am the following Wednesday.  It is the student's responsibility to check the website for the assignment each week. You are encouraged to work together on the homework assignments, but each student must submit their own original work. Because we have a considerable amount of material to cover this semester, I will occasionally ask you to work through some topics as part of the homework assignment before we discuss them in class. We will work some of the homework problems on the board in the recitation session on Wednesday (11:00 - 11:50 am). Therefore no late homework will be accepted. Also, no make-up homework will be accepted, but the lowest two homework grades will be dropped when your final grade is calculated.

Exams: We will have in-class exams on Wednesday October 5th and Wednesday November 9th from 10:00 am to 11:50 am. The final exam will take place on  Wednesday December 21st, from 8:00 am to 10:00 am in CHEM 0115.

Dropping the Course:

Note: the last day to drop without a “W” is September 14th.  The last day to drop with a "W" is November 9th.

Attendance: Students are encouraged, but not required, to be present for all lectures. Students are required to be present for all exams. If a student is absent on an exam day due to a medical issue, he or she is required to notify the instructor in advance, and upon returning to class, bring documentation of the illness, signed by a health care professional. Please see the university attendance policy at http://faculty.umd.edu/teach/attendance.html.

Grading: Mid-term exams: 20% each; Final exam: 30%; Homework: 30%.

Academic Integrity: The university honor code is in effect for all homework assignments and exams.
